Professional Capstone and Practicum
Documentation
The Professional Capstone and Practicum
course requires students to
select a course mentor. This mentor is
not a preceptor, but an
individual who will guide students as
they work to complete the
practice immersion hour requirements
for this course. Students are not
required to "shadow" their
mentor.
The course mentor should be someone who
can provide professional
development knowledge and guidance and
who possesses a genuine
interest in working with students to
further their academic goals.
Selection, approval, and retention of a
course mentor must be
completed as soon as possible at the
start of this course, as this
individual will be working with the
student on each assignment that
incorporates practice immersion hours.
Working with a course mentor is
mandatory

Professional Capstone and Practicum Reflective Journal

The reflective practice is a highly significant component in nursing curriculum as it nurtures nursing students and practicing nurses. This is particularly because reflection complements the process of learning, and professional growth and development in regards to skills, knowledge and experience. Further, Parrish and Crookes (2014) state that reflection shapes nursing practice has it provides a stepping stone for the nursing students to practice in real healthcare setting. Taking this into consideration, this reflective journal highlights the professional knowledge and skills gained throughout this course in light of management of adolescent suicide risks.

Professional Knowledge and Skills gained through this Course

I acquired a plethora of skills and knowledge with the topmost being the propensity to integrate best research, new clinical practices and expertise and patient values in decision making of personalized patient care through evidence based practice (EBP). EBP plays a pivotal role in supporting the integration of new clinical approaches into nursing practice within healthcare systems. Taking this into account, as defined by Ellis (2016), EBP is the incorporation of current best available research, new clinical practices and patient values to the decision making process which links solutions to present clinical problems and produces optimal evidence based solutions. I gained the ability to systematically collect appropriate evidences to establish the need for change in regards to interventions for adolescent girls at identifiable suicide risks. From the evidence I established a plethora of complex reasons for suicide, various self-harm methodologies, intervention strategies and potential barriers to implementation of interventions. As such, I proposed for the need of educational handouts to improve patient knowledge in light of suicide risks and consequently reduce the risks.

Regarding intra professional collaboration, according to Donley et al. (2014), it is the sharing, partnership, power, interdependency and process among nurses who work as a team to achieve enhanced patient safety, improved quality care and total patient/ nurse outcomes. I exhaustively gained insight regarding intra professional aspects such as organizational culture and values, standards and relationships, and resources and strategies that substantially influence the development and nurturing of collaboration and communication for enhanced team work among nurses…….Please click the icon below to purchase full solution at $5
