Asthma is one of the most prevalent respiratory conditions. According to the World Health Organization, approximately 230 to 235 million people across the globe have asthma. In addition, about 4.3 % of the global adult population has this respiratory condition. Asthma is a chronic condition that is characterized by bronchial hyper-responsiveness and inflammation of the airways, causing symptoms such as chest tightness, coughing, shortness of breath, and wheezing. This condition increases the risk of morbidity and mortality and incurs significant economic and social burdens on the affected individuals, families, and communities.
In the United States, statistics show that asthma causes over 400,000 hospitalizations, 2 million emergency visits, millions of missed work and school days, and over 3,400 deaths every year (Okoniewski et al., 2019). Additionally, the condition accrues expenses of nearly $82 billion every year in management. The number of persons with asthma has been on the rise in the last few decades. Scholars and experts postulate that the recent increase in asthma prevalence could be tied to environmental changes, increased environmental exposures, unhealthy lifestyle behaviors, and early microbial exposures (Okoniewski et al., 2019).
