The development of Socratic questions can be a challenge for a nurse educator. Is there something that makes Socratic questioning more difficult than just asking a “normal” or “usual” question? How can a nurse educator develop a habit regarding Socratic questioning?
Previously, I did not know much about Socratic questioning. However, this week’s reading has made me realize that it is a technique that was being used in my nursing program more than often. Socratic questioning is an approach of inquiry that involves questioning that can stimulate rational thinking or higher-order thinking. Using this approach encourages the student to engage in higher-order thinking and develop a greater understanding of the subject matter. It also helps the students to explore ideas in depth.
