(Answered)NR630 Week 5 Assignment: Capstone Preview Assignment

The capstone preview project focuses on a problem or issue identified during the executive practicum experience and suggests an evidence-based solution to the identified problem or concern. The capstone project’s topic should provide sufficient depth and scope to integrate evidence-based practice, multidisciplinary theory, and advanced nursing practice conceptsinto areas specifically related to the role of the nurse executive.

Purpose:

The purpose of this assignment is to provide learners with the opportunity to initiate the capstone project. The student will identify a practice issue or concern that impacts the role of the nurse executive and will conduct a literature search on the topic.  The student will develop an annotated bibliography to provide an understanding of the current literature on the capstonetopic. This will provide the foundation for development of the capstone project in NR660.

Assignment:

SBAR Tool in Communication

In a health care setting, an appropriate and effective communication network is important in enhancing care and service delivery. One such communication model is the Situation-Background-Assessment-Recommendation; (SBAR) communication, which has significantly grown to be a standard communication channel across healthcare departments. SBAR has proven its effectiveness in improving patient outcomes, enhancing clinical and patient satisfaction, while at the same time controlling healthcare costs. According to Achrekar (2016), SBAR communication framework improves patient handover and greatly delineates the benefits of patients and the nursing staff. Compared with the informal communication channel, SBAR maintains an environment conducive for improving patient outcome and streamlining healthcare operations.

In my healthcare environment, the transfer of patient information from the nurse to the physician during handoff has been facing significant challenges. As a result, there has been regular communication failure, which has substantially led to medical errors. Increased instances of communication failures have triggered a serious need to exploit alternative communication tool in the bid to improve the patients’ handoff. Earlier studies have proven the effectiveness of the SBAR tool in enhancing communication between healthcare providers, which in turn improves patient safety. Therefore, to promote communication between the nurses and physicians during handoff, SBAR has been proposed as an essential intervention measure to improve communication during patient handoffs.
