Description of an APN Role
Advanced Practice Registered Nurses (APRNs/APNs) include clinical nurse specialists (CNS) nurse practitioners (NPs), nurse midwives, and nurse anesthetists who have central roles in enhancing the future of healthcare practice (National Council of State Boards of Nursing’s (NCSBN), 2021). In most cases, APNs are primary care provides whose roles include treating, diagnosing, and managing illnesses, advising public health issues, and engaging in continuous health education. APNs must hold a master’s degree and an RN license. The APN role selected is NP. NPs, as described by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners (AANP) (2019), are APNs that provide acute, primary, and specialty care for patients across the lifespan through assessing, diagnosing, and treating injuries and illnesses. NPs work in diverse settings including hospitals, clinics, private clinics, public health departments, home health, etc. NPs assess, order, perform, supervise, and interpret laboratory and diagnostic tests, make a diagnosis, develop and initiate treatment plans (including pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic), coordinate care, prevent disease, promote health, counsel and educate patients and their families (Vega, 2020). NPs also serve as interdisciplinary consultants, patient advocates, and researchers. NPs practice independently and in collaboration with multidisciplinary healthcare professionals, offering various healthcare services. The NP role as described in the APN consensus model involves practices in family, women’s health, pediatrics, neonatal, psychiatric, and adult-geriatric care, with the scope of practice differing with settings and geopolitical laws and regulations (AANP, 2019).
