Identification of Problem
Nursing is a considerably dynamic and equally challenging profession that demands constant engagement and inspiration by role models and leaders. With the increasing changes and demands within the healthcare environment in today’s world, it has become a daunting task within the nursing profession to identify and develop nurse leaders and managers. According to Wong (2015), the leadership concept is of complex and multi-dimensional nature and as such, there has been no development of universally confirmed definition or existence of a model of leadership. However, with time, there has been increasing distinction and clarity of true nursing leadership and nursing management. This project identified the concern surrounding the need to develop nursing leadership and managerial skills in practicing nurses by aligning the nurses’ activities with their career goals. Description of Change
The project proposes alignment of nurses’ activities with their career goals for improvement of their leadership and managerial skills whilst demonstrating the propensity for application of healthcare concepts in healthcare settings. The change will include activities of building nursing profession by facilitation of nursing workforce to explore critical leadership principles and essential management skills by means of teamwork and group dynamics. Once the nurses’ activities go hand in hand with career goals, it becomes easier to grow, develop, and nurture leadership and managerial skills within the nursing practice. In relation to applying healthcare concepts, the project will focus on leadership and managerial concepts in healthcare. The nurses will be guided in identifying leadership style and models pertinent to their practice as being knowledgeable in leadership and managerial concepts will facilitate nurses’ development of competencies and equally enhance relationships with their colleagues and healthcare leaders and managers. The time span for change implementation is not specified as the nurses will be expected to continuously grow and develop their leadership and managerial skills throughout their professional nursing time.
