Research Critique Part II

This paper is a research critique for two quantitative studies “automatic fall detection system based on the combined use of a smartphone and a smartwatch” by Casilari and Oviedo-Jiménez (2015) and “smartphone-based data mining for fall detection: analysis and design” by Hakim, Huq, Shanta, and Ibrahim (2017). These articles are related to the topic of research and the PICOT question “For hospitalized patients (P), does implementation of smartphone or smartwatch fall detection and prevention systems (I), as compared to no fall detection and prevention systems (C), result in reduction of patient falls (O) in a period of 4 weeks (T)?”

Background

According to Casilari and Oviedo-Jiménez (2015), injuries resulting from patient falls especially among the senior patients are a significant public health concern that needs to be addressed. Casilari and Oviedo-Jiménez (2015) noted that patient fall resulted in increase in readmission rates, medical costs, morbidity, and even mortality. The authors identified that implementation of automatic Fall Detection Systems (FDS) was increasingly being researched on its effectiveness in preventing patient falls and wanted to do the same. The significance of the study to nursing is that it contributes to the already existing knowledge about FDSS for fall detection and prevention. The purpose and objective of the study were to propose and also evaluate an FDS built on accelerometer and a gyroscope embedded smartphone and a smartwatch. The research question was “What is the effectiveness of smartphone and smartphone-based FDS embedded with accelerometer and a gyroscope in detecting and preventing patient falls……..Please click the icon below to purchase the full solution at $10
