Social work practice is based on various skills, competencies, and application of diverse theories and concepts which inform on effective professionalism. Social workers are expected to understand and demonstrate these skills and knowledge in their roles and responsibilities (Shardlow et al., 2015). This is aimed at ensuring quality patient or client outcome. One of the core elements in social work skills and competencies is that they can be drawn from other disciplines including education, medical, and psychology which have an array of theories and models important in human welfare, growth, and development. It is therefore important to examine some of these theories and their relevance in social work. This paper examines Erikson eight stages of development and the relation of this framework to social practice.

Erikson Theory and Concepts

This theory is based on the psychology realm. As noted by Syetina (2014), this theory is centered on the resolution of various crises which directs one to become complete and a successful person. The theory was developed by Erik Erikson (1902-1994). Notably, the framework is a modification of Freud’s psychosexual framework which was controversial.
