One amazing change that took place in the mid-to-late 20th century in professional nursing was the development of coronary care and intensive care units in the 1960s whereby nurses started playing a pivotal role in caring for critically ill children and adults. 1961 and 1962 saw the establishment of coronary care units in some American cities (Krapohl, Manojlovich, Redman, & Zhang, 2010).
